I am so sad for Maine...and the rest of us, too. Still holding my breath here in Washington. Should have the final tally tomorrow. Looks good...but I don't want to get my hopes up.
I was surprised about California last year, and I was surprised about Maine this week. It's so disheartening to realize that our message is getting through and that people still hold on to their prejudices and ignorance. But I have hope that if we continue to educate young people that acceptance/"live and let live" is the right thing, that in time, we will be recognized as legitimate unions.
One question - opponents of gay marriage point to the acts of judges and legislature as "activist," hence removing the voice of the people. But were interracial couples allowed to marry due to legislative or judicial action? Most people would agree today that interracial marriages are perfectly acceptable.
So I still think there is hope - I just want to see it while I'm still young.
