'Real' Disappointed

Anyone else having a hard time getting into "The Real Housewives of New Jersey"? I had heard it was the best incarnation yet because the women really know each other (sisters, in-laws, friends) so it wasn't so much manufactured drama. But when I finally got around to watching the first couple episodes it quickly became apparent that they'd put all of the good parts in that "preview" show that ran a few weeks ago. (Big mistake, Bravo.) Part of me thinks the other problem is that housewives are, by and large, kinda boring and this is actually the first one of these that has ACTUAL housewives on it. I'm beginning to understand why: do I really want to hear about your fertility problems, your spoiled daughter's summer school classes or your retarded daughter's cosmetology school?

The only one who's the least bit interesting is Danielle Staub, the former "coke whore" with an 800-square-foot closet full of secrets, who everyone hates. I don't know if I only like watching these shows when they take place somwhere I've lived (Atlanta kind of bored me, too), but this had better get more interesting quick because I'm fading faster than I did drinking well vodka next to a chainsmoker at a video poker machine a few years ago in Atlantic City ...

The Jersey girls got a HUGE write-up in New York Times last week. Read the piece HERE. Or listen to Danielle talk about building her dream house HERE. I say give her her own show fast, Bravo, before VH1 poaches her tight ass!

What you said is pretty much what I have been hearing from most people about the show. The show has drifted so much, from being a show about the upper crust to a dramafest its just running on empty.

I also think it's generally a bad idea for a network to constantly make spinoffs of a once popular series, eventually the potency fades.

I'm excited for RHW: DC, though I'm sure all of the wives will be actual movers and shakers in Washington.

Y'know...I've always been sort of entertained by the Housewives phenom (and being a gay...I love most of what Bravo produces anyway).

But something about the NJ gals REALLY REALLY REALLY gets under my skin. I think I figured out what it is.

I was raised by my Step-Dad and his BIG small-town Italian family. On one hand, they are super loyal, big-hearted, loving, giving, awesome people and ridiculously amazing cooks. On the other, they are xenophobic, racist, intolerant, over-bearing, and ridiculously hypocritical when it comes to the ills of the world vs. the ills within their own little "family" structure.

The women involved with every preceding "Housewives" franchise on Bravo seem in-tune with and aware of the hubris and ridiculousness of the entire concept of the show. The NJ gals (ESPECIALLY the Manzo's with their little dirty catering hall and Mob connections) seem completely removed from, and convinced they are better than, the rest of "normal" society.

It stings thinking back to my little gay childhood, knowing how much the "big" family would look down on me for being different. When I watch these women, with their sense of self-righteousness (however misplaced), it evokes a visceral response and reaction I hadn't expected.

So I say: You GO Danielle! Fuck the bitches!
