NewFest '09 Gets Under Way

NewFest '09, New York's LGBT annual film festival, kicks off this evening, with an opening night gala at the SVA Theatre in Chelsea featuring the NYC premiere of "Mr. Right," Jacqui Morris' story about a group of London gay men -- a soap star, a reality TV producer, a model, a rugby star and a father -- and their fag hag who see old ties begin to fray over a summer that tests their friendships.
He's certainly not Mr. Wrong Last year I spent my birthday weekend -- June 8, still ample time to buy me a gift -- hitting a bunch of films -- "Ciao" and "Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon" were my favorites. This year, I can only make it to the opening night as I will be visiting my family in D.C. for the duration of the festival. (My parents and are bringing my adorable nephew along and we're hitting on the museums!) However, the films I'd be on the lookout for are "Pornography," David Kittredge's psychological thriller about two guys who try to solve the mystery of a porn star who disappeared in the ’90s. "Florent: Queen of the Meat Market," David Sigal's look into the life of Florent Morellet, the openly HIV-positive restaurateur who turned his namesake diner in the Meatpacking District into a hotbed of activism; "575 Castro St," Jenni Olson’s contemplative study of Harvey Milk’s “in case of assassination tape” played over shots of his former camera store; and "The Art of Being Straight," Jesse Rosen's tale of a bored 20-something who moves to Los Angeles to stay with his best friend Andy and his frat boy buddies, who then finds himself wondering why he's attracted to his older gay boss.

I'm always envious of people who were born in the warm months. I was born in December and the weather is never fit to run around and party :-(

My friend Matt Montgomery stars in Pornography. He's a great actor, appearing in many independent films and you can see him online at www.hiddenfrontier.com.

I know, a commercial, but he's great out actor who needs to be seen more.
