Lion's Cher

People are understandably disappointed in Cher's lukewarn support for her daughter formerly known as Chastity Bono's decision to have a sex change. But while I see their point -- and wholeheartedly agree that it would be BETTER if Cher kept her misgivings more private -- I don't see why anyone is at all surprised that 40 years into her life as an outspoken superstar that was built on Cher BEING Cher she would suddenly not speak her mind. (Hell, I'm GAY and I'm confused too. Being gay and being transgender are NOT the same thing last I checked.) Truthfully, I find Cher's acting "like a mother" to be kind of an endearing quality -- albeit one Chaz could probably use a lot less of right now. (Mothers: can't live with 'em, can't shoot 'em.) But who are we to tell other people in situations we ourselves have never been in how they should react? She said she will "strive to be understanding" and reaffirmed her "abiding love" for her child. That's all I would hope for from my parents if I announced I was a woman 20 years into being a gay son. When someone's lack of understanding DENIES someone else the right to do something, that's unacceptable. When someone's lack of understanding causes that person uncertainty -- even a gay icon! -- that's just called being human.

VERY well put. Your take on this from the beginning has been spot on.

I haven't understood any of the brouhaha over Cher's statement. I actually thought the (press agent assistant) written words were perfect -- "may not understand but will strive for understanding" ... or something like that.

Let's all be honest here. Cher isn't the plastic surgically enhanced poster rockstar for mother of the year. Republican Sonny wasn't much of a parental role model either.

I think any parent would be hard pressed in this situation.

But please, let's not forget that Cher has always said that she has never aspired to be a singer. She always just wanted to be a celebrity. And any good modern day celebrity knows that as long as they are talking about you, it's all good.

Chaz-Chastity learned at the feat of master mother.

Of course, mother's only have a word ...

or that would be "mother's only half a word ..."

addressing something more relevant to "issues" than the fashion report that reminds me that proposition 8 doesn't exist in a laxative world.
