Music Box: Eartha Kitt

While she wasn't even my favorite Catwoman -- be serious, people: Julie Newmar was absolutely purrrrrrrrrrrrfic -- and I sort of despise her most famous song (the only Christmas tune worse than "Santa Baby" is "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree"), I've still always ADORED Eartha Kitt. Fearless, outspoken, anti-war, pro-gay and ridiculously glamorous (Orson Welles reportedly called her "the most exciting woman in the world"), what wasn't there to like? I was on the treadmill yesterday when her '80s dance classic "Where Is My Man?" came on my iPod and it got me thinking that her publicist was right, the Academy Awards really screwed up when they omitted her from the In Memoriam segment of last week's Oscars. (She was an international star who appeared in movies with Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr. and Sidney Poitier, for crying out loud.) What a loss and what a pity. I wanted to post the video for Eartha's ultimate running song but could only find the original version, below. If you don't tell anyone, though, I've uploaded the far superior dance remix for your listening pleasure right HERE. Enjoy it, something tells me that's what Eartha would have wanted.

I had the pleasure of seeing Miss Kitt at the Cafe Carlyle in NYC in the fall of 2007- it was one of the best live music events I have ever attended. She was so engaging with the crowd, sang as well as ever, and it was the perfect place to see her- a small, intimate club. We waited after the show and got to meet her- she let us take a photo with her, even though I'm sure she was tired and just wanted to go up to her room. I sent her the photo with a note asking if she would sign it- she returned it signed and also wrote a really sweet note. Of course she didn't do Where Is My Man?, (I would have died!) but you can get a CD of her show recorded at Cafe Carlyle, and it's really good.

I had the pleasure of seeing her in the 90s playing a small NYC club -- before her career suddenly took off all over again. My favorite Kitt recording, "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." oh that purr.

The Academy also missed Peggy Lee the year after she died in its "In Memoriam." And she had been an Oscar nominee, for chrissake.
