Savitch Love

Anyone got any lodging, restaurant, etc. recommendations for New Hope, Pa.? I've never been, but Michael (who has, but many years ago) and I are thinking of taking a little road trip there in the coming months and I'd love some good advice. It's someplace I've been wanting to visit since around 1983 ...

If The Raven is still open, that's about the best place to stay as it has the only gay bar in the area. At least it was about 3 years ago when I was last there.

When I lived in Princeton, I used to go to New Hope on weekends fairly often. I really liked The Boathouse (which is actually in Lambertville, just across the bridge from New Hope.)

I had my first gin and tonic there, so it holds a special place in my heart.

"THE BOAT HOUSE , 8 1/2 Coryell St., at The Porkyard, Lambertville, N.J. 08530, 609-397-2244. A small, sophisticated bar tucked down an alley and complemented by a fine restaurant and art gallery. One of Lambertville’s “hidden” treasures. Mon.-Sat. opens at 4 p.m. Sun. opens at 2 p.m. AE, V, MC.*"

Wow...most readers probably won't get that reference to the late Jessica Savitch... I think you'd like almost any inn or b&b in New Hope.

I completely agree with Sean regarding the Boathouse. It's a quaint spot to have a good stiff one. Manon, a little French bistro serving excellent food is also a favorite in Lambertville.

Go to Havana Bar in New Hope to enjoy the out door seating/bar and enjoy excellent people watching.

Don't forget to check out the new local gay watering hole: Nevermore. It's tragic and fabulous all at once.

the raven is closed. as is odettes, where savitch died. the nevermore is just a badly rehabbed "best western" so i would advise you not to stay there. it's really expensive and the rooms are all old. you'd be better off staying in a bed and breakfast, like the "fox and hound" in new hope or the "golden plough inn" in peddlers village (lahaska, pa) just down the road.

it's not the greatest time to go to new hope, not for gay night life anyway since the area is in so much transition now.

I just daytripped to New Hope for the first time myself a couple of months ago and found the whole town to be disappointing (very touristy-schlocky). Lambertville, however, was a nice surprise, so I would check out that side of the river for accomodations.

I live in New Hope (14 years now). The Nevermore is the current gay club. They are planning to open a basement disco in the coming months. While it's still warm, the outdoor patio/pool area is the local weekend hot spot. The Nevermore did over their rooms which are nice but pretty standard hotel rooms.

As for lodging, friends stayed at the Wedgewood Inn recently and found it very nice (it's actually a complex of 3 inns). Stay away from the Wishing Well B&B which, though gay-owned, is sadly a dump. The Logan Inn downtown is historic and said to be haunted. The Lexington House B&B is out in the woods but gay-friendly and quite nice.

Lots of nice spots to stay/dine in Lambertville, NJ across the river including The Lambertville House and the Inn at Lambertville Station (right on the river).

Peddler's Village (about 3 miles west of New Hope) is a pretty & popular spot for shopping & strolling, big with tourists. Excellent for cruising (girls with HOT boyfriends and cute young husbands are in abundance)...
