Page 1 Consider (01/04)

  • Hit the Showers: West Virginia has selected Bill Stewart as its coach. The school dropped the interim tag from his title after the 11th-ranked Mountaineers' 48-28 win over No. 3 Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl on Wednesday night. Now someone might wanna tell him to keep Scooter Berry and Johnny Dingle from sitting next to each other on the bench. (AP)

  • Does This Lane Match My Outfit? I'd put a lot more credence in this new study that says women and gay men are the worst drivers if it hadn't been conducted at Queen Mary, University of London. (But remind me not to get into any cars with gaysian drivers. That means you, Eric!) (Advocate)

  • Now Letter Voyager: The U.S. Post Office has honored the legendary Bette Davis with her own 1st-class postage stamp. Am I wrong or did they airbrush the cigarette out of her right (gloved) hand? (AP)

  • Cut to the Chase: A new study says circumcision actually does not protect black or Latino gays from HIV. (But it sure makes me feel more comfortable.) (Advocate)

  • Tragic Ending: The New Jersey prison guard who was "thanked" in a mocking note by two "Shawshank Redemption"-inspired escapees has blown his brains out, leaving behind a wife and 4-year-old daughter. Friends say Rudolph Zurick, 40, had become distraught over having his reputation dragged through the mud following the Dec. 15 prison break. (NYP)

  • Begin the Begin: Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee sweep Iowa. (NYT)

  • Hunk on the Block: Cameron Mathison is putting himself up for auction -- to raise money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, an industry-based HIV/AIDS fundraising organization. The 38-year-old star "All My Children" will host a March 2 show at Town Hall to benefit the charity. (AP)

  • Inspiration: The Manhattan window-washer who plunged 47 floors is making a "miraculous" recovery. (NYT)

  • Playground Protection: The New Jersey Senate on Thursday unanimously approved sweeping legislation to strengthen New Jersey's hate crimes and anti-school bullying laws. The measure still needs a vote in the Assembly before heading to Gov. Jon S. Corzine. (365Gay)

  • RIP: Former Wisconsin governor Lee Sherman Dreyfus, who in 1982 signed the first statewide gay rights law in the U.S., has died. He was 81. Dreyfus died Wednesday at his home near Milwaukee, said Lee S. Dreyfus Jr. on Thursday. He had suffered from heart and breathing problems. (AP)
