Belgian Waffling

Spent the day out at the U.S. Open today. It was a bit of a scorcher, but nothing was hotter than Justine Henin's game. Sure, no one is more critical of the fierce not-quite-5-6 divorcee (we all have problems with her slips in sportsmanship and herpes outbreaks, don't we?), but I have to give credit where credit is due and the way she overpowered the 6-1 Venus Williams, who didn't really play half bad, was absolutely remarkable. Unlike the painfully sloppy first semifinal, where 2004 Open champ Svetlana Kuznetsova took out the youngster Anna Chakvetadze, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, the Henin-Williams match was a high-caliber affair. Williams, who is famous for making countless unforced errors, was steady and was able to raise her game when she was down (including saving some set points to force a first set tiebreaker). But when all was said and done she just couldn't come up with a game plan to beat the insanely talented Belgian, who is becoming increasingly Federer-esque in my eyes ...

kenneth, what was the reaction of the people in the stadium? i saw the match on tv, and obviously, they were heavily rooting for venus (thus making justine's accomplishment more special). being there, did you notice the audience being awed by justine, that they were admitting that this belgian truly deserves the number one rank? thanks.

Actually Venus did not bring anywhere near her A game. She dropped her serve, where I don't know, but she didn't have it on that court. Granted, considering she and Serena have played the fewest games this year of all the women at the Open, it's pretty remarkable that they challenged Justine as they did; especially Venus. But I'm sorry, someone needs to piss test that munchkin Justine because I guarantee you she's on roids. That little bitch plays like a man and a half!!!!

Tennis has had one of the most stringent drug testing policies in pro sports for a long time. It tests completely randomly, in and out of season, at tournaments and without notice at a player's residence. In fact, top ranked players get tested more frequently than anyone else because they play more matches. Your crazy charge has been thrown at Justine before (by Kim Clijsters jealous dad) and has never been proven right. Did you ever consider that Justine plays a) tactically smarter than anyone else, and b) has smoother strokes that are technically more correct that either Venus or Serena? Plus, in case you missed it, her counterpart Federer is a twig compared to Nadal or Roddick, but is never overpowered by either of them for the same reasons Justine beats the her competition.
