Page 1 Consider (05/08)

  • God Save the Queen: President Bush humiliates the American people once again, this time by winking at the Queen of England. (Does this asshole really think he's cute or something?) I guess we should just be happy he didn't grab her ass. (Evening Standard)

  • The Pink Ceiling: Corporate boardrooms are slowly becoming a somewhat friendlier place for gay executives, but as John Browne's sudden exit from the top job at oil major BP Plc showed when his sexuality became public fodder, there are still challenges to overcome. Yeah, especially when you're cavorting with a young hooker who has a thing for extortion. (Reuters)

  • Cry for Help: Seung Hui Cho never received the treatment ordered by a judge who declared him dangerously mentally ill less than two years before his rampage at Virginia Tech, law enforcement officials said, exposing flaws in Virginia's labyrinthine mental health system, including confusion about the law, spotty enforcement and inadequate funding. (WP)

  • Pitchers and Catchers: Actor Luke Wilson, left, chats with Texas Rangers pitcher C.J. Wilson after throwing out the honorary first pitch prior to the baseball game against the Toronto Blue Jays in Arlington, Texas, on Sunday. They make a cute couple.

  • Finding Out the Hardaway: When John Amaechi told the world he was gay, he steeled himself for a torrent of negativity that never really materialized, the former pro basketball player told the GOP's largest gay organization Saturday. "I underestimated America. I braced myself for the wrath of a nation under God," Amaechi said at the Log Cabin Republicans' annual convention. "I imagined that it would be a firestorm, that it would be some insane number of letters demanding my deportation or my death. "And in fact, 95 percent of the correspondence I've had have been overwhelmingly supportive and positive," Amaechi said. "But I will say that the 5 percent that I've had have been unbelievably, viscerally, frighteningly negative." (AP)

  • Not Necessarily the News: Craigslist found Craig Newmark thinks real news channels should follow the example of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, whose shows frequently deliver the news by juxtaposing video clips of lobbyists and other public officials giving contradicting statements at different times. Sounds like a good idea to me, but do you think The Situation Room could handle reporting real news? (AP)

  • Rocket Fuel: Roger Clemens is returing to the Bronx. But is it too little, too late?

  • RIP: While I was away the great Tom Poston died. Although he is fondly remembered for playing George Utley on "Newhart," it was his role at the Cliff Murdock (The Peeper) on "The Bob Newhart Show" that captured Poston at his best. As Bob told Emily (Poston's real-life wife, Suzanne Pleshette) when the Peeper came to Chicago for a job interview with his suit folded up in his suitcase, "You gotta admit that's colorful." Indeed, he was. He will be missed. (AP)

And it's not the first time GWB has made a complete ass of himself in front of The Queen either. Apparently at a dinner for the queen hosted by GHWB, First Lady Barbara Bush seated him as far away from The Queen as possible, and he still managed to open his mouth and insert both feet. It was on the newswires, our national newspaper picked it up today. I only wish they had enhanced the audio during his flub, as I couldn't quite hear what the Queen said back to him after the wink. But I bet she thought to herself "twit".
