Broadway Goes Blonde

Michael and I saw "Legally Blonde: The Musical" last night at the Palace Theater on Broadway. I doubt anyone going into this show is expecting the next "Waiting for Godot," so if a gigantic empty-calorie dessert is something you enjoy (and who doesn't?), this one's for you. Laura Bell Bundy's Elle Woods quickly allows you to check your "I miss Reese" attitude at the door, and sexy Richard H. Blake as Elle’s narcissistic ex-boyfriend, Warner Huntington III, makes it almost plausible that a girl would drop everything and claw her way into Harvard Law School for another shot at this man. Fans of the original will be impressed by the clever inclusion of some hard-to-duplicate film moments. Elle's video essay becomes an in-person visit to the admissions board, complete with cheer squad and marching band, and you haven't lived until you've seen your first made-for-the-stage trailer home (for Paulette Bonafonte's ex). In fact, the entire set was unbelievably cool -- and looked very expensive.

The lively songs and the talented supporting cast are also worth mentioning, and while the first half is stronger than the second, we laughed and smiled from beginning to end -- and didn't gain a single pound consuming all this candy-coated entertainment. What more could you ask for? By the way, all that talk you heard about this show being robbed by the Tony Awards is true: both dogs who played Bruiser and Rufus deserved best supporting actor nods.
