Afternoon Headlines

  • Some Like it Pop: An Andy Warhol painting sold for more than $71 million, more than quadrupling the previous top auction price for the pop artist's work, an auction house said. The Wednesday auction of postwar and contemporary art took in a total of nearly $385 million, making it the second most lucrative art auction ever held, according to Christie's. The auction was to continue Thursday. Warhol's painting "Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I)," went for $71.7 million to an anonymous buyer. The previous auction record for a Warhol work was $17.4 million, set when "Mao" sold at Christie's in November, the auction house said. Another Warhol, Lemon Marilyn, an iconic image of Marilyn Monroe, sold for $28 million.(AP)

  • Inn Hot Water: So poor little rich girl Tori Spelling's in trouble again, and this time it's not just with Candy. It seems her new "reality" show, "Tori & Dean: Inn Love" may have faked the entire premise of the show -- that the couple decided to shake things up by "leaving their Hollywood home, selling their stuff at an estate sale and investing Tori’s $800,000 inheritance into their new business venture -- bed and breakfast for their generation." The problem, you ask? Apparently the inn is just being leased, despite the fact that the show featured a scene in which the couple "close the deal by phone." Maybe "invest" means something different in the 90210 part of town. (NYT)

  • That Book by Nabokov: Gee, how could anyone -- let alone Amy Fisher -- resist a catch like Joey Buttafuoco, especially the 53-year-old fresh-from-prison (again) version? (NYP)

  • Jacked Up? Is movie star Hugh Jackman really moving to the small screen? CBS's fall lineup includes "Viva Laughlin," the U.S. adaptation of the BBC musical drama "Viva Blackpool," about a guy trying to open a casino in Laughlin, Nev., starring Lloyd Owen and Hugh Jackman. (I don't get it.) And the Times reports that "perhaps the most anticipated is 'Gossip Girl,' based on the book series, about the rivalries at an exclusive Manhattan prep school and the unknown gossipmonger who chronicles it all by text message. Among the stars is Blake Lively of 'The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.'" As my friend put it, it sounds like an instant fag hit -- "but then again, why watch it on t.v. when some of us live it already? (WP)
