After getting an e-mail from my childhood pal Greg telling me that he and his mom really enjoyed the premiere of
"Gay, Straight or Taken?" -- the potentially offensive new dating show on Lifetime -- I decided to get it a try. Little did I know that the gay population is so friggin' small that I would
immediately recognize
the embedded gay guy, a man I've actually featured
on this blog. (Click
here to see who he is.)

With the outcome spoiled, I decided to forge ahead and watch it anyway. The show was pretty much what you'd expect: everyone's abnormally cute (this is
not a complaint) ... the bachelorette is confused by everything ... she thinks the guy with the messy car is straight and the one who wears a Speedo is gay. And while my friend's point that the show "was very gay positive and actually shows how inconclusive and silly stereotypes are" is well-taken, to me the whole premise -- however subconscious -- still reinforces the idea that somehow being "straight-acting" is (or should be) the gay ideal, when obviously encouraging gay people
of all types to be proud of who they are would be a more effective -- if less entertaining -- use of time.

I ended up watching the two back-to-back episodes (although I fast-forwarded through parts of the second one). It was fun trying to guess, but I picked the gay guy as soon as he walked out... both times! Guess my gaydar is better than I thought. I had trouble decided who was "straight/single" vs. "straight/taken" but whatever... Not sure if I'll watch again... maybe just the first 5 minutes and the last 5 minutes...
They should just cancel this and give the straight guy his own show called "I'm So Fucking Hot- Pay Me Lots of Money" I'd watch.
The most exciting part of this: the bartender from The Abbey in West Hollywood is GAY!
YEAH!
I thought the Abbey just hired the straights in the bar to keep them from giving us gays free drinks.
I am now going to Luciano when I order my drinks there!
:-) :-) :-)
Did anyone other than me notice that Chris, the "TAKEN" guy, played GEORGE in GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE II?
