Free Mustache Rides

The New York Times weighs in on the great mustache debate in today's paper:
ARE mustaches cool? Uncool? Or so painfully uncool they are actually kind of hip? It’s possible they are all three at once, depending on who is wearing one and who is taking notice. One thing is for sure: No other style of male grooming sends so many potent -- and often mixed -- signals.
To decode the mystery of the mustache, a filmmaker named Jay Della Valle has made "The Glorius Mustache Challenge," for which 50 men younger than 30 were asked to "rock the ’stache" -- to grow whatever they could on their upper lip --for a month as a kind of fashion dare. “It was just a funny and quirky idea that people reacted to,” said Mr. Della Valle, 26, who sports a curly handlebar (if not a respect for the traditional spelling of "glorious”). “I thought it would be fun to grow mustaches because most guys didn’t have them."

Many participants reported receiving harsh reactions -- particularly from women -- once hair sprouted above their lips. Aram Gumusyan, a 27-year-old tax attorney in Manhattan who participated in the film, said his own mother told him not to come home for Christmas with a mustache. "She thought it was a juvenile prank and that it looked absolutely disgusting," he said.

I may have broached the subject a few dozen times or two before (see below), but Michael and I were just talking the return of the 'stache on Halloween night when this 20something kid came into Better Burger with this huge mustache. We both looked at him, looked at each other, looked at him again -- and then asked ourselves, "Is that a costume?" (Upon closer inspection we realized he was wearing normal clothes so it wasn't.)

You should check out www.movember.com A men's charity that aims to rename November to MO vember, while collecting cash for men's charity - prostate & testicular cancer and male depression.

All we have to do is grow a mo, get it sponsored and attend a parte (sic) at the end of the month. Responses range from disgust to total appreciation. (unfortunately my wife is on the disgust side!) Quite and interesting experiment, especially the camaraderie between mobros when we see each other across a pub or a street. And intrigued looks from unaware people, especially as most people try to grow the seediest possible mo. Some cheats are simply not shaving, aiming to craft a mo for the parte (sic) surely not in the spirit of Movember!

A mo for life? hmmm have to see at the end of the month, but can't imagine it!

You are welcome to sponsor my mo, should you feel the desire! :-)
