The Writing on the Wall

While the tabloids scurry to get the dirt on the undercover drug probe that closed a number of bars and nightclubs here in Chelsea, the party promoters John Blair and Beto Sutter didn't seem too concerned about the fuss, sending out this mass e-mail to their devoted legions, adopting a "if they won't let us have our party here then we'll just have it somewhere else" attitude:

In case you have not heard, Spirit was the 17th club this year that the New York Police Dept. has shut down. This happened this last Friday night. This Sunday's party will be moved next door to BED NIGHTCLUB ... That is right!! ..... Right next door to Spirit. 5000 sq foot roof deck over looking Manhattan ... 2 dance floors ... WE'RE SURE YOU'LL LOVE IT!!! HIGH NRG POP REMIXER DJ ESCAPE on the main floor DJ VITO FUN on the roof deck!

New York Night Life is under siege. there will be more clubs closed in the next couple of months. It looks like no club will be left out! But like 16 of the other 17 clubs that have been closed down this year... it will be for one weekend only .. SPIRIT WILL BE OPEN NEXT WEEKEND!

Oddly, there was nary a mention of cracking down on the drugs and violence that permeate their establishments, which is to say nothing of the sex. For those who missed the tally, here are some of the details:

  • View Bar, where undercovers said they bought cocaine and ecstasy. (Surprisingly, no one was arrested for the slogan "Our Coffee Is Always Hot" that adorns View Bar's sign during its daytime persona as JAVA BOY. (What if it's an iced coffee?)
  • Splash, where undercovers allegedly bought $2,700 worth of cocaine. (Finally a use for this place and they shut it down?)
  • Spirit, where cops said they witnessed assaults, including a stabbing; alcohol being served to minors, as well as drug use and sales. (It was a great venue when we saw the Psychedelic Furs and no one stabbed me all night.)
  • Avalon (formerly the Limelight), where cops reported buying ecstasy. (How else do they expect people to stand being in that tired-ass place?)
  • Club Speed and Steel Gym were issued "restraining orders," meaning they can stay open if they stop illegal activity. At Speed, cops allegedly were offered sex for money, and spotted drug use (speed, perhaps?). In Steel Gym, undercovers reported buying the drug crystal meth. "
