Fat Chance

With the Centers for Disease Control reporting that 95 percent of Americans are morbidly obese (a figure I think is rather conservative), I find it admirable that Hollywood has not caved in to this trend and still does not hire actual fat people. Bravely, producers and casting directors are continuing to opt for the time-honored tradition of stretching Hollywood's ripped, toned and beautiful stars to the limit by casting them in fatty roles.

Now it's no big secret that Hollywood has never been shy about patting itself on the back. So isn't about time they started giving out awards — perhaps in conjunction with the Fatty Hall of Fame — for the stars who were willing to look overweight on screen?

Some nominees that come to mind:

* Ryan Reynolds (pictured) for his whale-turn in the new comedy "Just Friends"
* Charlize Theron for being overweight and having fake bad teeth in "Monster"
* George Clooney for not being entirely perfect on purpose in "Good Night, and Good Luck"
* Minnie Driver for being at least 5 pounds overweight in "Circle of Friends" (God knows it must have been hard on her; she hasn't stopped reminding us she wasn't really fat for 13 years.)
* Gwyneth Paltrow for being pretend fat in "Shallow Hal"
* Toni Collette for pigging out until she was almost a Size 6 in "In Her Shoes"

and perhaps a Lifetime Achievement award to:
* Renee Zellweger for the "Bridget Jones" saga ... because she did it twice!

And let's not forget Toni Collette, once again, for "Muriel's Wedding." She gained more weight for that than for "In Her Shoes."

It's posts like this ("almost a size 6") that remind me why I love you, Puddin'!

Some oldies... Barbara in The Mirror has Two Faces and Bette in First Wives Club.. But there is only one actor that comes to mind when going to the other direction, in the extreme, Christian Bale in The Machinist.
