Kenneth in the (212) Turns 20

Hard to fathom that when I spontaneously opened up a Blogspot template on Sept. 4, 2005, and wrote a short post late at night after watching Robby Ginepri beat Tommy Haas at the U.S. Open that I would be still be blogging two decades later ... yet here we are!

Thanks to everyone who has come along for the ride, which certainly has exceeded my wildest expectations. (God knows it's always been for the love of it, with what little advertising revenue some of us once earned long since evaporated thanks to Facebook and Google.)

Along the way my site has allowed me to make numerous new friends -- some famous, some infamous, and some just tremendous -- get invited to countless parties, screenings, movie premieres, book releases, theatrical productions and more; achieve my dream of writing a book of essays after being "discovered" by a noted agent; and best of all even land a husband

In an attempt to remember what I looked like at the time, I dug up these these photos from 2005 -- the Hamptons, a Go-Go's concert, Miami. WeHo and Venus diner -- all of which made the blog!

Life has also had its somber moments over the years -- we buried our father; my best friend in town died suddenly months after I started my blog; I got and lost a dream job or two; I've said goodbye to two very special critters (Troy and Larry); and my brother Bill was taken way too soon -- so logging on here each day has been a source of stability when other things have felt out of control. (See also: World, The.)

While I don't have a timeline for how much longer I will digitally be Kenneth in the (212), for now I'll share with you my 10 most popular posts (out of more than 39,000) -- some expected, some not -- as I say cheers to 20 years. I wouldn't have done it without you! xo

Kenneth in the (212) Turns 15: My 10 Most-Viewed Posts

If you had told me in 2005 that I'd be celebrating this moment -- 34,218 posts later -- I'd have totally believed you. Before the internet my life revolved around making lists -- my favorite bands and albums, favorite movies and TV shows, every tennis racket I've ever used, all my friends dating back to birth -- so blogging was the perfect marriage of obsessive-compulsive disorder and technology.

As longtime readers know, it's been a wild ride since launching my site on whim with a short post after attending a late-night match between Tommy Haas and Robby Ginepri at the 2005 U.S. Open. (Most blogs end up dying within a month!) There have been new friends, new lovers, new opportunities. And there have been lost friends, lost family members and major life changes. But through all the ups and downs, the one thing that's kept me going on my blog is hearing from readers, readers who maybe recall to an obscure old song or television show I might mention, or relate to experiences I've shared, who thought they were the only one. Thanks for making this fun. xo

To (belatedly) mark the occasion, here are my 10 most-viewed posts, which I'm happy to see include two of my favorites and labors of love, Numbers 4 and 9. Although blogs as we know them are dying, I was surprised to see the posts that made the list are mostly from recent times. Perhaps another 15 years isn't out of the question?

Weekend Tennis Roundup

World Team Tennis ended on an exciting note, with New York Empire and Chicago Smash coming down to a sudden-death point in extended play, winner takes all. Coco Vandeweghe and Nicole Melichar were playing Sloane Stephens (subbing for Genie Bouchard) and Bethanie Mattek-Sands, and Coco ended up hitting a winner off Sloane’s serve, clinching the Billie Jean King Cup for New York, 21-20.

Empire was the home of Neal Skupski and Jack Sock as well as Kim Clijsters, who was on a tear before (I believe) getting injured. With the exception of Danielle Collins behaving like a child, it sounds like the confined environment was a safe one for professional tennis.

Here's hoping they have similar luck in Flushing Meadows later this month. Next up is the women's event in Palermo, where I hear someone already tested positive.

Jan-Michael Gambill and his WTT broadcasting partner

Not even Tommy Paul's ass could muscle the Washington Kastles to the crown.

The Ultimate Tennis Showdown started up again in Nice, France, this time with men and women. Although I saw some exciting tennis, I found myself more interested in the coaches -- Alize Cornet's, above, and Alexander Zverev's, below -- on the sidelines.

Sergei Bubka Jr.

Turns out Bubka is the son of a Ukrainian pole vaulter ...

with quite a pair of gams.

BTW: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Zverev won. (Ironically, the German made it official with another coach -- David Ferrer.)

The other big event going on was the Battle of the Brits. Unfortunately, the Tennis Channel seemed to ignore most of the matches. The only thing I saw was a terse "racket tap" between Kyle Edmund and Dan Evans after the latter defeated the former for the second time in a row (both exhibitions).

Around the Net:

For some reason Corentin Moutet keeps getting invited to UTS (good) .

.. but fellow French Quentin Halys does not. (Can something be done about that, please?)

Will Stan Wawrinka's game be as tight as his social media?

Tommy Robredo's waiting

I'm surprised Juan Martin del Potro is even willing to try again
