Weekend Tennis Roundup

World Team Tennis ended on an exciting note, with New York Empire and Chicago Smash coming down to a sudden-death point in extended play, winner takes all. Coco Vandeweghe and Nicole Melichar were playing Sloane Stephens (subbing for Genie Bouchard) and Bethanie Mattek-Sands, and Coco ended up hitting a winner off Sloane’s serve, clinching the Billie Jean King Cup for New York, 21-20.

Empire was the home of Neal Skupski and Jack Sock as well as Kim Clijsters, who was on a tear before (I believe) getting injured. With the exception of Danielle Collins behaving like a child, it sounds like the confined environment was a safe one for professional tennis.

Here's hoping they have similar luck in Flushing Meadows later this month. Next up is the women's event in Palermo, where I hear someone already tested positive.

Jan-Michael Gambill and his WTT broadcasting partner

Not even Tommy Paul's ass could muscle the Washington Kastles to the crown.

The Ultimate Tennis Showdown started up again in Nice, France, this time with men and women. Although I saw some exciting tennis, I found myself more interested in the coaches -- Alize Cornet's, above, and Alexander Zverev's, below -- on the sidelines.

Sergei Bubka Jr.

Turns out Bubka is the son of a Ukrainian pole vaulter ...

with quite a pair of gams.

BTW: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Zverev won. (Ironically, the German made it official with another coach -- David Ferrer.)

The other big event going on was the Battle of the Brits. Unfortunately, the Tennis Channel seemed to ignore most of the matches. The only thing I saw was a terse "racket tap" between Kyle Edmund and Dan Evans after the latter defeated the former for the second time in a row (both exhibitions).

Around the Net:

For some reason Corentin Moutet keeps getting invited to UTS (good) .

.. but fellow French Quentin Halys does not. (Can something be done about that, please?)

Will Stan Wawrinka's game be as tight as his social media?

Tommy Robredo's waiting

I'm surprised Juan Martin del Potro is even willing to try again
