Song of the Day: 'Work on Me Baby' by Culture Club

Came across this homemade video for a great song from Culture Club's fourth album, "From Luxury to Heartache," which was overshadowed by Boy Georgia's drug addiction and the band's subsequent implosion. Culture Club would not release its next album for 13 years -- another underappreciated effort that never even saw release in the United States, where the band had briefly ruled the charts with three platinum albums (one four times over) plus six Top 10 singles in barely three years

Song of the Day: 'Life' by Culture Club

My friend joked that Culture Club must have gotten a new singer -- yes, Boy George's voice isn't what it used to be on the band's latest album, "Life" -- but the songs are pleasingly catchy, which is more than half the battle.

Song of the Day: 'Runaway Train' by Culture Club

One of the standout tracks from the new Culture Club album, "Life." Sure, Boy George's voice is much deeper (grizzled?) than it used to be. But the quality of the melodies is what's so impressive, even all their years later. Interestingly, the song I've chosen for today was one of the ones that had been written a few years ago for the scrapped album "Tribes." It started out as a country-tinged tribute to Johnny Cash, but wound up with more of a soul feel. Both are good, but if you prefer the former you'd better not tell Miss O'Dowd, who had this to say to a fan on Twitter:

Has it really been 19 years since their "reunion" album (that never even got a U.S. release)?

Song of the Day: 'Let Somebody Love You' by Culture Club

Boy George's voice will never be what it was -- and since it was so good to begin with, he had a lot farther to fall. But his famous band's first new song since 1999 is enjoyable enough, in a familiar reggae-infused Culture Club kind of way. It's from a forthcoming album called "Life."  Longtime fans will remember that 2014's "Tribes" (via PledgeMusic) inexplicably never saw the light of day, but I'm guessing the remnants are included here.

Song of the Day: 'Just Be' by Marilyn

Nice new song from Marilyn, that he produced with Scott Houzet and Victoria Wilson James. It was recorded at the Barbican, and features Claudia Fontaine ("Cry and Be Free," "Every Day I Write the Book") on backing vocals and Eric Robinson fingering the Steinway. Sadly, the singer laments on social media that it will never see the light of day beyond this slideshow video.

Song of the Day: 'YMCA' by Boy George

Who better to cover the Village Boy classic than the Culture Club leader? What starts off pretty joyless sure turns itself around!

Culture Club Tumbles 4 'Today'

Anyone catch a Jon Moss-less Culture Club on "The Today Show" this morning? (Fear not: Moss is still in the band, just out with a back problem.) I knew their tour had been postponed because of Boy George's throat polyp, but I didn't realize the album ("Tribes") had also been. The band's playing the Beacon Theatre later this month and I'm still debating going: They were SO FLAWLESS at Radio City Music Hall back in '99 (for the horribly underrated "Don't Mind If I Do" tour) I'm not sure I wanna test fate again!

UPDATE: Yikes. Just dug this up. Boy's voice sounds pretty shredded.

Waking Up With the House on Camera

Boy George Tumbles 4 Reality Show From Bunim/Murray

Will you watch?

Via Deadline:
The Culture Club singer is moving from London to Los Angeles, and he believes you’ll want to follow the action. Boy George and his manager Paul Kemsley are teaming Bunim/Murray Prods and producer Cindy Cowan to develop a docuseries chronicling said relocation. The trio will exec produce along with Bunim/Murray’s Gil Goldschein and Jeff Jenkins. Plans call for shooting to begin this summer when the singer arrives in L.A. “If Marge Simpson met Dolly Parton and went dancing with Ziggy Stardust, it wouldn’t come close to what you’ll see,” Boy George said in announcing the project. “Why now — why not? Why me — who else?”
Between this and the newly rescheduled tour dates, sounds like his throat polyp is all better. Still, with all these changes in his life, let's hope there is no crossover into A&E's reboot of "Intervention."

Good Karma

Boy George writes:
It was amazing to get the 'Q Idol Award' and it felt especially exciting after our reunion gig at Heaven. Here's to the future!
Everyone's looking great some 30 years later, no?

Song of the Day: 'Like I Used To' by Culture Club

Oh, my. The last Culture Club reunion produced one of the best albums of the 1990s. (Such a pity it never got a U.S. release.) I'm not convinced lightning's going to strike twice, though: George O'Dowell's voice sounds more like Joan Rivers than the Boy who'd tumble 4 ya back when. Sure hope I'm wrong -- was so looking forward to this.

Song of the Day: 'Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?' by Culture Club

What a disaster: Culture Club is playing one of my favorite venues but I will be in Arizona that week for Thanksgiving and my mom's birthday. Their 1999 reunion show at Radio City Music Hall was one for the ages -- please come back again soon, guys!

Act like you don't notice the blackface jurors!

Song of the Day: 'Karma Chameleon' by Culture Club (live at Edinburgh Castle)

The boys dust off the cobwebs for their first show in 15 years with this classic song -- which happened to come on at Elmo Saturday afternoon. Everyone in the room started singing and dancing and became very happy!

Song of the Day: 'I Just Wanna Be Loved' by Culture Club

Didn't get too excited about Boy George's solo return, but I am over the moon about the impending Culture Club reunion. Although it didn't get a U.S. release, the band's 1999 reunion album -- "Don't Mind If I Do" -- was fucking incredible, so I have high hopes for Reunion 2.0! The band is playing a one-off pre-reunion concert this week in the U.K., which I would really be willing to hurt someone to attend.

Boy George Is a Total Doll

Totally missed this doll back when it came out in '84. (Love that they included "The War Song" look on the box!) Here's hoping the Culture Club singer's new album spawns a new one in 2014. The makeshift video for the first single, "King of Everything," certainly doesn't shy away from nostalgia.

Song of the Day: 'Time (Clock of the Heart)' by Culture Club

It's a shame Culture Club's beautiful blue-eyed-soul brand of music has become a footnote in the messy life of singer Boy George. The band's five studio albums are timeless, but it's the stopgap single "Time (Clock of the Heart)" -- released between "Kissing to Be Clever" and "Colour by Numbers" in the UK -- that ranks as my favorite, with a tongue-in-cheek video that's as sentimental as the song's heartfelt lyrics. Note to the Department of Homeland Security: Please let Boy George return to America to tour!

Music Box: Christmas Classics

The other day I lamented Blondie's lame attempt at Christmas cheer. While I said it was hard for even a band as cool as they are to not come across as lame doing a holiday song, I wasn't exactly on target. Quite a few artists have brought their yuletide cool to the airwaves over the years -- including the Pretenders, Kirsty MacColl & the Pogues, Band Aid, Frank Sinatra and the Wilsons, whose original Christmas song ("Hey, Santa!") was better than anything they'd ever recorded. A few years ago I compiled my ultimate holiday favorites for the "Very Kenny Christmas" CD, and today I'll share three songs with you, including "2000 Miles," one of the worst videos of all time!

Culture Lesson

It may not be Tuesday, but I'm feeling awfully Joe.My.God. right now. No, I didn't become a bear over the weekend. But I do have a pair of tickets to Boy George's Aug. 14 show at Terminal 5 to give away to one of my lucky readers!

In his first New York City concert in 10 years, Mr. O'Dowd will be singing "The Hits of Culture Club and Beyond" -- and what a glorious string of hits they were: "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?," "Time (Clock of the Heart)," "I'll Tumble 4 Ya," "Church of the Poison Mind," "Karma Chameleon," "Miss Me Blind," "It's a Miracle," "The War Song," "Mistake No. 3" and "Move Away" all hit the American Top 40 between 1982 and 1986, making Culture Club one of the most successful bands of the new wave era. More recently, when not imprisoning male hookers or calling the cops on himself when he has 1,000 pounds of cocaine in his own apartment, George has made headlines as the writer and star of Broadway's highly underrated "Taboo" and as one of New York's most glamorous street sweepers -- ever.

So, the first person to e-mail me the answer to the following question wins: After the initial demise of Culture Club, from what film did Boy George score his first Top 40 solo hit? (Name the film and the song, please.) Send your answer here.

Bad Boy

Boy George is making headlines again, this time for missing a court appearance related to last year's messy drug arrest.

I happen to think Boy George has the best white soul voice our generation has ever heard -- and would recommend steering clear of the tabloid headlines and checking out this little-heard solo number of his from the late '90s, called "When Will You Learn?" It's a great song and a fun, Culture Club-inspired throwback of a video. (AP)
