‘All of Us,’ and Something More

Hope you had a safe -- and fun -- New Year's Eve. Damian and I started the evening with a quick bite at our favorite diner before catching a showing of "All of Us Strangers" -- our first time seeing a new release in a theater since "Battle of the Sexes" in 2017.

Today I've been emailing this to everyone I know:
Have you seen “All of Us Strangers”? It’s by the same guy who did “Weekend” and “Looking” and even though it has a surreal element to it -- which is not my thing -- it was so incredibly moving. Really speaks to gays of a certain age, specifically ours, (My inner child pretty much bawled for 90 minutes straight.)
I know everyone doesn't live for slow paced and dialogue-driven films the way I do. But for me, it was worth dealing with 30 minutes of insipid trailers -- way to remind me why I don't go to the movies anymore! -- and the idiots on their phones in front of us to not have to wait to see this one. I don't care much about awards, but if Andrew Scott doesn't get an Oscar nod, then we might as well not give them out at all.

A pal emailed me this morning that he too had seen it, calling it the most disturbing movie he's seen since "The Deer Hunter" in 1979: "That movie left me crying in my childhood bedroom afterwards. I remember my brother coming into my bedroom to ask me what was wrong." Read his review HERE.

From there went made our annual pilgrimage to Joe's Pub to see Sandra Bernhard. She was her usual caustic self -- "I love you as a crowd, but individually not so much." As fans know, she loves to "sing," and her song selection is always the best part of the musical portion of the show. This year we were subjected treated to:

"Ride Like the Wind" (Christopher Cross)
"You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" (Lisa Marie Presley)
"Kiss Me Deadly" (Lita Ford) /“Just Like a Pill” (had to look up: Pink)
"Help!" (for Tina Turner) (Beatles)
"Stop Your Sobbing" (for Chrissie Hynde) (Kinks)
“People” for Barbra Streisand (Jule Styne/Bob Merrill)
"Say Yes to Heaven" (had to look up: Lana del Ray)
"Salt of the Earth" (Rolling Stones)

According to my friend Mark, Sandra had been saying on her radio show that Chrissie Hynde would be making an appearance on New Year's Eve. I replied:
"Sadly, no Chrissie. Don't see anything online about her being at the earlier show either. There was a funny anecdote about her and Sandy butchered 'Stop Your Sobbing,' so there was that."

All in all, another fun outing.

On the way home we passed Washington Square Park in all its glory ...

Then saw the wonderful tree atop Rosemary's on our way for a quick drink at Pieces -- how retro!

Always reassuring to see the World Trade Center in the distance

And the Empire State Building decked out for the changing of the year.

Such a beautiful reminder why we live in this fair city of ours! xo

Boring dialogue movies are my favorite as well as foreign films. I'll have to look into this movie and Weekend. What's that one about to help whittle down my Google search
