Went to have a sandwich at a sidewalk cafe near my new apartment on the Upper West Side and would you believe a guy came out of nowhere and ripped my phone out of my hand -- bashing me in the chin in the process -- and ran? Everyone sitting there was kind and as stunned as I was. (My jaw is already back to normal.)
As I was heading home -- with plans to probably stop in the Verizon store near my place -- I saw a guy HOLDING MY PHONE* walking down Broadway (away from the restaurant), so I snuck up behind him and ripped it out of his hand. (Who am I?!) He too was stunned and turned and said: "Hold up. Is that your phone? I was bringing it back to you. My friend took it and I told him to give it back. You don't have to get aggressive with me -- I'm trying to help"(!). I scoffed and walked away, with my iPhone in pocket, only then catching my reflection and realizing I was wearing my superhero-inspired "Super Gay" T-shirt all the while.

What a New York story.
So glad you got it back! How random... It's like when people would grab them out of your hands on the subway, does that still happen?
