J.J. Wolf and Diego Schwartzman put on a show
Daniil Medvedev took a confidence-boosting step forward on the eve of Wimbledon as he claimed the first grass-court title of his career at the Mallorca Championships. The top see took down American Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday to claim his second title of the year (also Marseille) and his 11th ATP Tour crown. “I’ve always liked playing on grass. Four years ago, I would say that it was my favourite surface. But after my results on hard courts I couldn’t say anything else other than hard courts, and I still like playing on hard courts more,” Medvedev said.
Alex de Minaur fought back to overcome Lorenzo Sonego 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) and claim his first grass-court ATP Tour title at the Viking International Eastbourne on Saturday. The Australian's four other tour-level crowns have come on hard courts, and he is now 8-2 on grass this season. He reached the quarter-finals at the MercedesCup in Stuttgart and the semi-finals at the cinch Championships in London. Victory over the Italian means he will move to a career-high No. 15 in the FedEx ATP Rankings.
Angelique Kerber won her first title since Wimbledon in 2018 by beating Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-2 in the final of the Bad Homburg Open. Back in a final for the first time in two years and playing in front of a home crowd, the three-time Grand Slam champion broke Siniakova’s serve six times en route to her 13th career WTA singles title. Would like to think she can use this momentum to do well this fortnight at Wimbledon, but she could just as easily fall in the first round.
In a battle of the Baltic States, Jelena Ostapenko took out Anett Kontaveit 6-3, 6-3 in the Eastbourne women's final, her fourth WTA title overall. (One of them happens to be the 2017 French Open!) Look for the Latvian to have gained no confidence this week in London.
And in doubles, Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic’s dream season continued at Eastbourne as they defeated third seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury 6-4, 6-3 to win their seventh ATP Tour title of the year. The Croatians, who have won ATP Masters 1000 titles in Miami, Monte-Carlo and Rome, are now 42-6 in their first year together. What a shame their positive Covid tests kept them from playing in Paris!
