Song of the Day: 'Send in the Clowns' by Judy Collins With Boston Pops

I'm not even sure if I believe Jill Sobule's tweet, but I haven't been able to stop cracking up imagining it to be true!

Judy Collins's version certainly was inescapable when I was a boy in the mid-1970s, although I'm startled to see it peaked at No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 -- just one notch higher than Blondie's "Island of Lost Souls" performed. Perhaps my parents were fans of a "light" station, because I see it reached No. 8 on the Adult Contemporary chart, although even then that sounds low.

UPDATE: BearyNYC notes that Judy's version actually made the Top 40 twice, which explains a lot. It hit No. 19 in 1977!

"Send In The Clowns" made the top 40 2 times. First in 1975, when it did peak at #36. In 1977, it made it all the way to #19.

Her thin, screeching voice haunted my ‘70s childhood. Never knew “Send In the Clowns” was such a good song until I heard SOMEONE else sing it!
