Song of the Day: 'Drift Away' by Dobie Gray

Considering how many times this song has been played on the radio, it's almost unfathomable that it peaked at No. 5 when I was a first-grader at Roosevelt Elementary School in Madison Heights, Mich. Would be curious to know what kept it from going higher.

Possibly, like a lot of great songs that should of gone higher, Drift Away got caught in a traffic jam. The following week, You Are The Sunshine of My Life and Tie a Yellow Ribbon held #1 and #2, with oddity Little Willy by Sweet at #3. and then My Love (McCartney), Daniel (Elton John) and Frankenstein (Edgar Winter) bolted by Drift Away, pushing it down and it couldn't recover. Stuck in The Middle With You was below Drift Away and met the same fate.
