Novak's Pain in the Neck

It's hard to know what to make of Novak Djokovic's latest injury. Clearly his neck issue is causing him discomfort. (His on-court treatment reminded me why I don't believe in chiropractic "medicine"!)

DT Next writes that the No. 1-ranked Djokovic was playing his first ATP match in six months because of the coronavirus pandemic; he pulled out of the doubles event Sunday because of his neck. “I''m trying to deal with it on a daily basis,” he said. “It''s been like that for the past three or four days.” Still, Djokovic improved to 19-0 in 2020 as he prepares to seek a sixth title from the past eight Grand Slam tournaments when the U.S. Open begins in a week. That major championship's site in Flushing Meadows is hosting the Ohio-based Western & Southern Open, too, as part of an unusual doubleheader with no spectators. Djokovic got by, even though he was wincing and stretching his neck between points, then wound up laying on his back -- a medical mask and protective glasses on his face -- while having his neck manipulated after the first set.

Born June 21 1990, in the capital city of Vilnius

While he was lucky that Ricardas Berankis -- who was so cute it got me rethinking not advertising my Lithuanian lineage on my mom's side -- choked at key moments in the match, you have to wonder if he would be better off pulling out and letting himself heal before the U.S. Open starts on Monday.

Perhaps Tennys Sandgren will put Nole out of his misery later today.

UPDATE: Djokovic had no problem dismissing Tennys Sandgren on Tuesday afternoon.

When I first did 23andMe it got my Irish and German ancestry right. But it was vague about my paternal grandfather, whose family was full-blown Lithuanian. (My report just said "Eastern European.") Over the years as 23andMe has collected more DNA samples, I've noticed my composition graph getting more specific, now going so far as to list Lithuania's Alytus County as a likely location for the Kulikauckas and Bielskas broods. Time to check some immigration documents!
