Song of the Day: 'My Last Date (With You)' by Skeeter Davis

Today's pick is "My Last Date (With You)," which saw Skeeter puts words to the immortal tune by pianist Floyd Cramer. Perhaps not surprisingly, I first fell in love with this one when R.E.M. produced a version for Debbie Harry's 1993 album, "Debravation." The boys from Athens had recorded the instrumental version (known as "Last Date") as the b-side of "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" -- a song many of us have had in heavy rotation these past few weeks -- then used their talents to flesh it out for Deb. The outcome has always been my favorite song on the album despite its being labeled a bonus track.

Belated note on your original Skeeter Davis post:

Her single "The End of the World" was released a few weeks after the end of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, when a lot of people thought the real end of the world had been narrowly avoided. Timely.
