New Year's Day With Juliana Hatfield

Had sort of a bittersweet evening last night thinking of my brother Bill while watching his girl Juliana Hatfield perform at City Winery. (She actually opened for someone I’d never heard of , Joseph Arthur, till I met Damian.) Bill was a rapid JH, Blake Babies and JH Three fan, which led to my seeing her at Hammerjacks in Baltimore with my old Huntington Beach roommate Paul during a blizzard in ‘94 — nearly got killed on the way there in a non-4-wheel-drive Isuzu Rodeo! She's as self-deprecating and insecure as ever, but put on a great set featuring a bunch of songs from her latest album ("Pussycat") as well as classics like "Everybody Loves Me but You" and "My Sister." Highlight of the evening: Finding out her next album is all Olivia Newton-John covers -- tentatively titled "Hopelessly Devoted to Liv" -- and hearing her sing “I Honestly Love You” and “Suspended in Time” live. It was like Bill and I had been reunited!

Went with Damian and his sister Marci, who is a HUGE Joseph Arthur fan!

UPDATE:

I see she's doing "Have You Never Been Mellow" and "Physical" elsewhere!
