A Divine Birthday

Order HERE.

I recently downloaded "Shoot Your Shot: Divine Anthology,” the perhaps too-comprehensive sequel to "The Story So Far ..." -- a favorite of mine from high school. (How many remixes of "Native Love" does a girl need?!) To mark what would have been John Waters's muse's 72nd birthday, Matt Rettenmund lovingly ranks the singer/actor's most divine singles -- and there were many! -- HERE.

By the way, while we were in New Orleans, Damian noticed VNV Nation was playing at One-Eyed Jacks in the French Quarter, a beignet’s throw from our hotel. I'd never heard of them, but it was his birthday trip, so I was up for whatever he wanted to do. I think he sold me on them by saying they were "kind of like Depeche Mode, but a little darker.” While I was there they did indeed remind me of something, but it wasn't a goth Depeche Mode. It nearly took me all night to figure it out, but then it suddenly hit me while looking at Ronan Harris -- the band's big bald singer with a big gruff voice: He was Divine, only in Harris Glenn Milstead clothing! I played a couple songs for Damian when we got home, and he agreed.

Best shirt of the evening ...
