Auf Wiedersehen, München

Had a memorable couple of days and nights in Munich, with the highlight being our day trip to  Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavarian King/queen Ludwig II's nineteenth-century Romanesque Revival palace built at the top of a foresty hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria. (What a hike!) The U.S. has many glorious places, but I don't believe I've ever seen a view as spectacular as this. (Or is it the bratwurst talking?) Now we're being dazzled by the scenery from the train taking us from Munich to Vienna -- the hills are truly alive in Salzburg -- and are looking forward to a little relaxation in the city before heading to Wimbledon on Thursday. Cheers, everybody!

We were in Munich in 2015 and took a day trip to the Neuschwanstein Castle. Wow what a beautiful place. Our tour guide was good. She told us about a shuttle that takes you to the top and then you can walk down. That hike is pretty steep! Did you sit by the lake at the bottom? It is almost as beautiful as Lake Louise in Canada. The lunch places were packed too so we got some that you could order from the window.

When I was there, around 2005-6, you could ride from the village to an area near the Castle in a horse-drawn carriage, for €5. I went in November, which was a perfect time to be there. There were no entrance lines, and because so few tourists visited in the off-season, our guides let us linger in the castle's magnificent rooms as long as we liked.

That day was one of the best days of my life.
