Former NFL Tackle Comes Out as Gay, Says He'd Planned to Commit Suicide After Football

Former Patriots and Chiefs tackle Ryan O’Callaghan, who spent his NFL career feeling isolated and alone while listening to anti-gay slurs in the locker room, says he had always planned to commit suicide after football, until Kansas City Chiefs staffers stepped in.

"As long as there are people killing themselves because they are gay, there is a reason for people like me to share my story and try to help. People need to understand that we are everywhere. We’re your sons, your daughters, your teammates, your neighbors. And honestly, even some of your husbands and wives. You just don’t know it yet…It’s not always easy being honest, but I can tell you it’s much easier and more enjoyable being yourself and not living a lie."

Read his harrowing tale -- written with a few journalistic headscratchers -- that has a happy ending HERE.

I am all for suicide in certain situations, but your sexuality shouldn't have to be one of them. I'm glad he got help, and wish him a long and happy life.
