Song of the Day: 'The Stand' by the Alarm

Tickled to hang out with my friend Greg on Sunday and to hear him say his big brother came down from Albany the night before to drag him to see the Alarm in concert at Gramercy Theatre. Greg had never heard of them -- and no one hanging out with us at Julius' had either -- but I sure was a fan dating back to my brother Bill buying their debut EP after hearing "The Stand" on college radio in Tucson. This was back in the days when being on a certain record label meant something, and with the likes of R.E.M., the Go-Go's, Wall of Voodoo, Oingo Boingo and the English Beat all signed to I.R.S., you knew you were in for something good. I caught Mike Peters and his latest Alarmists at the now-defunct venue Spirit back in 2004, when they opened for the Psychedelic Furs. Much to my surprise, they received a much bigger welcome than the headliners, which explains why they're still going strong after all these years.
