Former Senator Finds Love Again, This Time With a Man

Read HERE.

Former Democratic U.S. senator and onetime Obama surrogate Harris Wofford has revealed he is to wed for the second time after finding love again after the death of his wife of 50 years -- only this time he will marry a man. The 90-year-old wrote a moving op-ed in The New York Times about the tragic loss of his wife, Clare Lindgren, to leukemia in 1996 and beginning a new chapter of his life with 50-year-his-junior Matthew Charlton, with whom he has been involved for 15 years, having met five years after he became a widow. Wofford, a Pennsylvania senator from 1991 to 1995 and an adviser to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., met Clare while serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II(!), he writes in the Times. Read the piece HERE. And Sam Stein hits the nail on the head here:

Wofford was an excellent Senator, and has had an amazing life.

As an advisor to JFK during the 1960 election, he persuaded Kennedy to call Mrs. King after MLK was arrested and jailed. News of the call helped swing the then largely Republican Black vote to the Democrats, and may have given Kennedy the presidency.

He lost his Senate seat to the vile Santorum during the 1994 GOP sweep.

Oh, and check out this quote from Wikipedia, and try not to think of Auntie Mame.

"At age 11 he accompanied his widowed Grandmother on a six-month world tour. They spent Christmas Eve in Bethlehem, visited Shanghai shortly after the Imperial Japanese Army captured it, spent time in India where Wofford became "fascinated" by Mahatma Gandhi and visited Rome, where they saw Benito Mussolini announce Italy's withdrawal from the League of Nations and a subsequent fascist parade. While attending Scarsdale High School, he was inspired by Clarence Streit's plea for a world government to found the Student Federalists. By the time he was 18, the organisation had grown so large that Newsweek predicted he would become President."
