Damn, Daniel: I'm Clueless

I love when I've never heard of something that's become an Internet sensation until the Gray Lady writes about it, which invariably means it's not one anymore. (I thought Downtown Julie Brown was doing the voice, but it turns out it's a male friend!)

Anyone?

This is the dumbest thing ever. Ever ever.

Kenny, Kenny, Kenny. What are we going to do with you, dude?

This situation started in a California high school. A friend (Josh) made a Vine video of his friend Daniel. Apparently, Daniel wears clean sneakers and dresses very, what we would call, preppy.

Somehow this video got passed around and now this 14-year-old and his Vans are a popular thing. Remember "Alex from Target"? He was on Ellen's show, too.

It's called "going viral", and it's a demonstration of people's attention to irrelevance.

Two things here.

1. Naturally, this kid is young, thin, male, and white. Would this video achieve the same level of success if he were not?

2. Although we all love Ellen, wouldn't it have been better for her to donate the new shoes to a homeless shelter instead of to an upper-class boy who obviously can afford shoes of his own?

Not sure if you heard but the guy who posted those "damn daniel" video became a victim of swatting.

It's one of those things a few hundred thousand teenagers revlog and these media companies thinks is something big. There are over 100 million people on the internet in the U.S. alone, this doesn't make an impact.

It could be 'you're too old to understand', but comes across as 'you can call me Ray, you can call me Jay'. Unless you experienced the madness first hand, it makes no fucking sense and everyone will deny months later that they ever 'got it'.

They were cute on the show :) And the Damn Daniel is catchy. It could easily be a Web series or A Saved By The Bell type of thing.

They were adorable on Ellen -- Daniel is 15 now, still jail bait. (although I suspect there are circumstances in private when the friend is saying "damn, Daniel")
-- Michael H wasn't listening when Ellen said "VANS wants to give you a lifetime supply of shoes"
Daniel is free to give them away

PS-- White slip on tennis shoes were "Fag shoes" in my day, and, I think, yours, Ken.
