A Sophomore Slump for 'Transparent'?

Was unpleasantly surprised by the first three episodes of season 2 of "Transparent," which officially returns to Amazon Prime today. They weren't bad, but the show -- whose debut season was one of the finest things to ever air on television -- is suddenly flirting with the supernatural in a way that I don't think serves it well. It could turn out that what I've seen sets up the greatest thing in the history of television. But as of now, the only thing I like about the new season is the heavy dose of Colton -- (horrible) Josh and former babysitter Rita's teenage son -- played by a young Tom Brady lookalike named Alex MacNicoll who is just begging to be sexually abused at a family reunion. Anyone else tuning in yet?

Definitely my favorite show of last year - haven't seen any of the new season so fingers crossed. BTW, if you haven't seen Casual, you might enjoy it. Similar tone. Great performances.

I actually enjoyed the 2nd season more than the 1st. At first the flash backs to early 1930s Berlin seem odd, but in time they introduce a very beautiful story arc. I don't want to give away any spoilers for those who haven't had a chance to see it, but the context of the story arc will make more sense for those who have a basic understanding of early 20th century German LGBT history.

I would not bother to watch the second season after watching the first season. I thought I was going to get a series about the challenges of being a transperson in this world. What it would up being was a series that mostly focused on the three self-absorbed children who constantly went around doing drugs and making other questionable decisions. (e.g., the youngest daughter wanting a menage-a-trois but really doesn't discuss it with the people she wants to participate.) Just a really shallow show, if you ask me.

I definitely preferred the second season. It was wonderful.
