Takes Its Towle

You know, people: not everything is black and white. Caitlyn Jenner can be a Republican attention whore and deserve to have her transition covered with dignity and respect. Acting like it should be ignored -- when it's someone of such a high profile -- is disingenuous at best. And even if you think very little of her, are you really incapable of looking beyond yourself to see that bringing visibility to the T in LGBT might be a good thing, whether you like the way she's going about it or not?

It's as if every commenter over at Towleroad was raised on a strict diet of Lucky Strikes and Bette Davis movies. Note shift from comment one to comment two!

Why are you people so awful?

Looks like intolerance is the new black.

I gave up on Towleroad a few weeks back. I could not stand such vitriol coming out of the comment section. It doesn't seem moderated and (I know it's the internet--but still!) there is no accountability. Sadly, I see things haven't changed.

For as long as I can remember, the Towleroad comments section has been dominated by sick and vicious creeps.

Towleroad is a great site. It's too bad Andy Towleroad doesn't do something about the repulsive sick puppies who vomit all over his site.

I rarely skim the Towleroad comments. Whenever I do, they usually leave me feeling disgusted at how bitter and twisted some people can be.

The bitterest pill is hard to swallow. Sorry you feel that way but it's true. Everything these men said about the situation is true. And, sometimes.... the truth hurts!
I'm sure Caitlyn's money will make it just a bit less so.

I usually avoid the comments. Every once in a while I'll post something because the post got me interested. But, I'll never post anything if there are a hundred responses already and they're all infighting among the bigots and the few defenders of decency.

Towleroad is a great site, but yeah, of the gay sites that I read, it has the worst comment section. I have no idea how they reaped so many gay-only in the acronym, g0y and oxymoronic gay MRAs.
Happily, it's very easy to just ignore the comments on that site.

@Andyboybroccoli: Thanks for adding to the discussion. You seem smart.

There is something just so ick about the way she's following along the Kardashian money & PR stream. But I'm with you, Kenny, the hatred is unnecessary. And it's only a matter of time before Caitlyn will come to some realizations about her new position as a trans woman. For now, I'm only mildly supportive, but to hate on her is cruel.

As I've said before, I've given up on Towleroad. As it's expanded over the past couple of years and become more commercial, it's losing its focus. Seems like they want to be a household name like the Huffington Post. Nothing wrong with that, just not of interest to me anymore.

And I have a serious problem with anonymous comments. It brings out the worst in people who are too cowardly to own what they say.

I think the uproar over Caitlyn Jenner is people attacking what they don't understand rather than adopting a live-and-let-live attitude. It's the way humans have always been – anything non-conformist is ostracized until it becomes common enough to be accepted. This is all very new to most of us.

Another issue is that the "LGBT" community used to be the "gay" community. Now everyone who doesn't fit in with the sexual majority wants to ride the waves of progress the "LG" part have made lately, and suddenly you're thrusting together disparate groups with divergent interests. There's going to be tension that only time will resolve. We're still fighting racism a century and a half after the end of slavery. It's too soon to expect everyone to jump on the "T" bandwagon – we're not that evolved as a species. Patience and diligence are required here.
