Sunset Strip's House of Blues to Close Aug. 7

More bad L.A. news, a city that's been on my mind a lot since my recent visit. I was just walking past this place -- where I saw the Bangles reform and had the Go-Go's cancel on me after flying cross-country because Belinda was, um, "sick" -- and thinking maybe the rumors I'd heard that it was being demolished to make room for another mixed-use behemoth were fall. Apparently not. Sad footnote: This is where Lana Clarkson was working that fateful night she went home with Phil Spector.

By the way ...

THIS is what's taking its place.

Damn, I've seen some great concerts there, it's a great music venue with excellent sound. Another blow to the live music scene here, another place gone for bands that are too big for clubs like the Troubadour but not popular enough for places like Club Nokia downtown. And for *that*, another "mixed use" block in WeHo that will be a traffic nightmare, yikes.
