Bad 'Sex'

The first season of "Sex and the City" was kind of a mixed bag. On the one hand, it was grittier and more realistic -- and chock full of Skipper. It also randomly cut to those those fun interviews with the public about various relationship topics. (If it felt more "Desperately Seeking Susan" than Bergdorf Goodman it's probably because Susan Seidelman directed three episodes, including the pilot.) On the other hand, it also featured Sarah Jessica Parker doing a very bad imitation of hubby Matthew Broderick's most famous character, talking to the camera to embarrassingly bad effect. Today, the Daily News re-ran and poked fun as its early review of the show -- "So maybe we were wrong" -- but what's funny is some of the complaints seem strangely off-base to me: The show was too "California" and "Melrose Place"-y??? Say what you will, but that was never the problem.
