From her groundbreaking 1981 album, "Torch," which was recorded amidst her painful breakup from James Taylor. "Torch" was a bomb at the time of its release, but paved the way for similar standards LPs by the likes of Linda Ronstadt, Rod Stewart, Cyndi Lauper and others. This tearjerker's by Rodgers and Hart, whose lyrics always left me bewitched, bothered and bewildered in a way Oscar Hammerstein's never did.

If I need to hear a contemporary artist tackle the Songbook I return to Ronstadt and Riddle. Just about all the others including Simon(Torch was ,pretty dreadful to my ears) Stewart and the Gaga Bennett duo leave me cold. But to each their own I suppose.
Torch was the album that exposed a lot of standards to me, side one was really good. Of course the Linda Ronstadt/Nelson Riddle albums later opened my ears up to more, but Carly gets the appreciation for my love of Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Julie London, etc.
