Song of the Day: 'Message of Love' by the Pretenders

If you're wondering how you can write a love song without even a hint of schmaltziness, listen no further. I'm still astounded by how good this is every time I hear it. #eternalgoosebumps

Can't help but wonder what the Pretenders might have been capable of if James Honeyman Scott and Pete Farndon hadn't been such messes. Although there were more good albums to come, the group was a band in name only. Strangely, only on the new "Stockholm" album is Chrissie Hyde using her name as the artist. In fact, she just announced fall "solo" tour dates, and I can't help but wonder if she can fill these places on her name alone, despite the fact that she has been the Pretenders for more than 30 years now.

I saw the Pretenders with Honeyman-Scott and Farndon in Santa Monica during the tour for the second album. They were an incredible live band: tons of energy, great songs, great stage presence. Don't use heroin kids, it's really bad for you.

As to your last question, she's playing her solo show here at the 2,000 capacity Pantages, if she went out as The Pretenders, she'd be in 5,000-6,000 seater, say The Palladium or Nokia Theater downtown.

@Henry: That's interesting. The Beacon seems bigger than places the Pretenders play here in NYC, but then again, I don't really have a good sense of the capacity of venues!

I went to Wikipedia to check on the Beacon Theater capacity (2,829), look at who's playing there in the photo they use:

Hahahaha.
