The Golden Age of Tennis

At the risk of sounding like the old fart that I am, there really was no better time in the history of tennis than the late '70s. The rivalries were more rivalrous, the game had more gamesmanship, and the shorts were way shorter. Need I say more? Keep lusting HERE.

Sorry, Kenneth, but being 10 older than you, that was not the "Golden Age". I'll grant you that there was more "entertainment" but that was obnoxious behavior being hit back-and-forth over the net, but not better play. Great play, but not the amazing play that followed.

For actual quality tennis, the height of the "Golden Age" was 2005-2013 -- the most amazing competition the sport has ever seen. There has never been such a time when three players, Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, and quickly coming into making it a quartet with Murray, not only dominated the rest of the field, they battled one another exhibiting talents never seen before: Federer with his ability to spot a ball most anywhere in the opponents side, seemingly at will; Nadal whose wrist action invented news spins and torque that even overwhelmed Federer; Novak, whose charm was backed up, first with an almost backboard quality returning every shot until his opponent committed unforced errors, later to rededicate his talent, finding answers to take on both Federer and Nadal at the same time; Murray, who, once he got a true coach (mom was great getting him into the top, but lacked the ability to get him into the very top), using his shear physical dominance to have his turns overpowering even the top 3.

Their quality of play is true poetry in action.

And, fine short shorts were cute in the moment, but really, better looking and more charming than Roger, Rafa, Nole, plus so many other hotties like Verdasco, Roddick, Robredo, Blake, Safin, Cillic and dozens more.

For Women's Golden Age, a longer time frame as it evolved from when Chris Everett held No. 1 through Martina to Graf -- there were also amazing matches battling out slams and rankings.

Their streak for continuing their Golden Age ended when Serena took over -- she simply so dominates the competition. When she is "on" she is unstoppable. Alas, unlike Everett, Martina and Graf, Senera has some really down moments and a few down seasons.

Now, as to the short shorts, I'll take Rafa and Nole's taking their shirts off after a victory every time. Those boys are HOT. And, pretty good with a tennis racket too.
