The Parent Trap

Saw Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" yesterday and it's definitely my movie of the year. (If reviews that give away plot specifics are your thing, click HERE.) Also happened to watch "The Guilt Trip" on Netflix and although they're considerably different in tone -- "Nebraska" is much darker for a number of reasons -- I couldn't help but notice a remarkable similarity between the two, each featuring a son taking an unnecessary road trip in an attempt reconnect with a parent who he feels failed him in some way, only to discover Mom or Dad is merely human and more fragile than he ever realized. An Oscar nomination for Bruce Dern is a must, but Will Forte deserves a lot of credit too. As for "The Guilt Trip," it wasn't a award-worthy material, but Barbra Streisand sure reminded me why she is the star of several of the funniest movies of all time!
