I hope you can help me settle a dispute.
My friends claim that doing this: "blah blah blah blah blah." (i.e. putting the quote mark after the period) is the way it should done, as do most style manuals.
I claim it should be "blah blah blah blah blah". (i.e. the period is the end of the sentence, not the quote marks) because it doesn't make sense to have a thing that denotes the end of a sentence not end it.
Help!
Your friends are right, but only for the reason you stated. It is a style issue, and in America the style is punctuation inside the quote. In the UK, however, you would be jolly good!
Thanks for your reply. As an Anglophile, I'll gladly stick to my preferred usage.
