Splash -- NYC's Most Famous Gay Bar -- to Close After 22 Years

Wow, surprised to hear that Splash will close Aug. 10, after 22 years in business. Truly the end of an era, which included a time when seeing new videos in the front of the joint was where I learned about fun new music. Strangely, I had just been in a gay bar for the first time in ages (Phoenix in the East Village) and was so happy to see how packed it was. I had heard everything had moved to apps and computers, so I was beginning to wonder if the "gay bar experience" -- a touchstone of my gay youth -- even existed anymore. I'm guessing it does, but with Chelsea giving way to Hell's Kitchen as the gay neighborhood, perhaps this has more to do with gentrification than anything else. Still, I'm truly stunned.

Sad to see another one bite the dust. A good one too. Bars have always come and gone, but the experience has really changed from 10, 20 years back. DC has very little nightlife now, everyone says ame. Very is sad IMHO. Yes, I remember it well....

Bars come and go, they sometimes change for the better and sometimes for the worse depending our your preference. I stopped going to Splash when visiting NYC years ago after they remodeled and expanded. And Dan, DC still has its fair share of GLBT bars.

Splash was going downhill for some time. They kept raising their prices, probably in desperation. I felt in the end they were just trying to rip off the gay community. Bye bye.
