Alec Baldwin Fires Back at Anderson Cooper

Well this is fun. Alec Baldwin, while on Howard Stern discussing the controversy around his calling a Daily Mail reporter a "toxic little queen," took aim at Anderson Cooper for posting the following tweet in response to his choice of words:
"Why does #AlecBaldwin get a pass when he uses gay slurs? If a conservative talked of beating up a "queen" they would be vilified."

Said Baldwin:
"Anderson Cooper has a job to do. And that job is to try to reinforce his credibility in the gay community after the fact that you couldn't get him out of the closet for 10 years with a canister of tear gas. Now he's the sheriff. Now he's running around writing everybody a ticket!"
Hashtag snap. I asked my Facebook friends whose side they were on, and Team Alec is off to an early lead:

Chris wrote:
Alec is 100% right, Anderson played coy in the glass closet for years until his career/paycheck was secured, then decided he didn't have anything to risk by FINALLY owning up to what everyone already knew about him. Now he's suddenly a gay crusader? Anderson, I love you but you need to have a seat. Alec read you for filth and that shit was hilarious and stung as the truth often does.
Hank wrote:
Alec. Anderson, who now says he's been "out since high school," wrote a memoir which talked about the most intimate details of his life, including his brother's tragic suicide. But he never mentioned one person he's ever dated, let alone his sexuality. But now he's a gay pioneer.
Although Bob sees things differently:
A pox on Gays who knock Anderson! Think of these 3 things: a) He travels to report in countries that kill Gays, b) By coming out too soon he would have spoiled our chance to see a Gay man anchoring the national news each night, and c) his mother is one of the most famous women of the 20th Century, was constantly in the news, had lots of marriages and a lot of tragedy, and his brother jumped off a roof. Would that not make YOU prefer not to draw attention to your private life?____ Do you give him NO points for never lying, never creating BS publicity about dating women, etc? It helps the cause more when people who could have remained silent speak up.

Alec and Anderson deserve to share a Mint Julep with one straw for 60 seconds.

Team Anderson all the way. What Alec Baldwin said about Anderson can easily be said about Alec himself. He didn't become a complete douche until HIS paycheck was secure on 30Rock. -AtomicGabe

Perhaps, Anderson and Alec could perform on SNL. Alec will portray a local rebel drag queen, who has lost a heel in the sands of The Sahara, who interupts Anderson's live update on The Middle East, requesting lavender spikes from Cher or Rupaul.

Alright. The only real question is "does AC have a point? and the answer is "...barely." "Toxic Queen" is no longer a gay-specific criticism (anymore than "drama queen".)

Alec is using his attack on Anderson in order to take the heat off of the offensive comments that Alec made. Instead of making any legitimate apology for his own remarks, he's pointing at Anderson and saying.... look over there....

I am a viewer of Mr. Cooper's reports. When I view him, I take action to help. I am no longer a news junkie, rather a goodwill enabler. Thank you Mr. Cooper and Mr. Walsh, my fellow goodwill enablers.

Alec has his own brand of drag. Remember, the first Queen? The Queen who said,'' QUEEN FOR A DAY.'' Every day we drag on and beat ourselves to state imortal camp. Cheers dears, Miss driftwood

Eve Arden said,''Bedroom eyes.'' in 'Mildred Pierce'. If you are as brave a Queen, as I can travel, you have remembered those words from your first viewing of the picture, /movie/ dear hearts.

Not everyone should be treated in exactly the same way. Baldwin saying "toxic queen" is a hell of a lot different than Rep. Steve King saying it. Context and history play a part in my opinion. Having said that I'd tell Alec to not get too familiar with the word queen unless he is one.

The Times equates Alec calling the writer a queen to Paula Deen using the n-word? Really?

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/23/booming/a-straight-man-asks-how-to-ditch-a-gay-friend-when-traveling.html?src=recg

I've yet to hear any straight people use "queen" as a put-down. Seems more like a (sorta) insult gays say snidely to one another. Alec probably only knows it cuz he has a lot of gay friends/colleagues, who may say it casually w/o much notice.

Doesn't bother me -- actually, it gives me a giggle. Is that wrong? Is it like saying the n-word? Not seeing it. Can anyone clue me in?

I'm OK w/Anderson being the gay police. At least we have some ally in the public eye, when we might need him. For this one, maybe not so much.

How does Anderson Cooper figure that Alec Baldwin has gotten a pass? Every time I turn around, either Baldwin is being bashed directly, or someone is bashing "so-called liberals" for not bashing him.

Are these people f'in kidding me? Baldwin is a bully and has been one for decades. My God he's calling baristas at Starbucks queens with bad attitudes. By naming the guy and the location it opened up the barista to harassment from around the world. So why does he get a pass? Because he's funny, he's good looking, what is it? He's an asshole, a privileged asshole short and simple. His tap dance explanation of why "toxic little queen" is ridiculous. Baldwin has a giant forum because of his celebrity and he uses it as a bully pulpit.
