Serena Williams Is Still a Horrible Person

Apparently Serena Williams won't be happy until she's alienated everyone. In the same interview where she all but blamed a 16-year-old girl for being raped by two football players, she also made some bitchy comments about someone who sounded an awful lot like Maria Sharapova.

Busted Racquet writes:

Serena commented on an "anonymous" player, saying, "There are people who live, breathe and dress tennis. I mean, seriously, give it a rest ...She begins every interview with 'I'm so happy. I'm so lucky' – it's so boring," says Serena in a loud voice. "She's still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it." (An educated guess is she's talking about Sharapova, who is now dating Grigor Dimitrov, one of Serena's rumored exes).
Sharapova took offense to what was said and let it be known that she wasn't so happy about it to the media on Saturday.

"Obviously I have a tremendous amount of respect for Serena and what she's achieved on the court," Sharapova said. "If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids. Talk about other things, but not draw attention to other things."
The media is now claiming that Serena went on a charm offensive, reaching out to apologize to Maria. But the apology sounds an awful lot like the one she offered to the rape victim -- she's denying everything and saying everyone else got it wrong, not her:
"I made it a point to reach out to Maria because she was inadvertently brought into the situation by assumptions made by the reporter," a smiling Williams told reporters. "I personally talked to Maria at the player party, incidentally. I said, look, I want to personally apologise to you if you are offended by being brought into my situation. I want to take this moment to just pour myself, be open, say I'm very sorry for this whole situation... "I'm the first person to reach out to individuals and people if I feel that something may have hurt them or something may have been misconstrued."

Why do you have such a hard-on for Serena?

In this instance it was the reporter that said it was about Maria. He SPECULATED. Doesn't sound like he asked Serena to go on the record and say who the person was. He just assumed. And now you're mad at her for that?

I love you and your blog and I just have one question.....have you never said a catty remark?

All the mean shit that was/is said about her and Venus, Mary Brillo (sic) calling her "it" instead of "her" and she never gets a moment to be catty? C'mon, there's at least a little context here.

She can speak French and drive a Rolls. She still has no sense of grace or modesty. To be 31 and still comment about going to "cool parties" begs questions about her maturity and sense of priorities. After watching Venus deal with her illness with infinite grace, I hoped Serena would learn a lesson or two. Still hoping.

@Craig: I suppose it's one of those things where if you like someone you cut them some slack, and if you don't you don't.

But I have followed tennis RELIGIOUSLY since 1977 -- through "horrible" people like Ilie Nastase, John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors -- and I have never seen someone behave as poorly as Serena Williams. The "ball down your throat" and "if you see me in the hallway, walk the other way" thing were the straws that broke the camel's back. And these latest two things just support my theory that she's just awful.

Totally agree with Garrett: Venus was always the dignified member of the family.

I don't think Serena would say she's always acted in the way she believes she should. There's one big glaring issue that makes me want to give her some benefit of the doubt, and that's how she was, and to some degree still is, treated differently than other players. Henin was/is (by most accounts) a total bitch and yet that wasn't the main topic of discussion when she played. I think given the extra hurdles she's had to jump and endure she's entitled to a moment or two to not be perfect.

It wouldn't surprise me if she's emotionally stunted in some way...the Jehovah witness thing, tyrant father coach, ostracized early in her career AND still manages to be the best player ever.....that's why I cut her a little slack

@Craig: Well, this will be a great relief to you then. No one was harder on Justine Henin than I was! Thought her shenanigans against Serena at the French were completely inexcusable and if you want to know what else I thought of her, just do a quick search for "herpes" or "Valtrex" on my blog!
