Kennedy's Finest Moment

Peniel E. Joseph says in a NYT op-ed that President John F. Kennedy's finest moment was the speech he gave on national television shortly after he had to send in the Alabama National Guard to remove Gov. George Wallace from the campus of the University of Alabama so two black students could enter to attend class. I just watched it -- Mr. Joseph is right. (Via @Lawrence)

Bonus points if you can remember where you were when George Wallace was shot during the 1972 Democratic presidential primaries. My brothers and I were visiting our recently-separated-from-our-mom father at the John R Motel in Madison Heights, where I guess he must have been hiding out. Our Hillbilly neighbors -- the Blys -- must have been devastated. Wallace was their candidate.

I was doing arts and crafts with a friend who had invited me to her Lutheran church's after school program. May 15, 1972, right?
