One of the advantages of no longer being young are memories. As a boy I remember old Penn Station before it was demolished. It was a magnificent edifice, huge in scale and incredibly grand. The main room, vast and flooded with light, was modeled on the ancient Roman Baths of Caracalla! The still extant post office in the back on 8th Avenue gives a very small hint at the scale of what once was. Today’s station, a shabby, dark, underground warren is a hellish and disgraceful mockery of the glory that once was.
