Valerie Cherish

I haven't bought People magazine in a dozen years or more, but I just reflexively handed it to the cashier at Rite Aid last night. Valerie Harper isn't going to make royalties off sales of this week's cover story, but I somehow felt it was the least I could do to show my love and appreciation for her long and impressive career. Ann Romano hurt, but this is like losing a family member. I hope you're basking in the love right now, Valerie.

I'm glad she was honest about her cancer. It gives everyone an opportunity to tell her how much they love her, have enjoyed her work and send her messages of love and strength. I just read the article about Nora Ephron by her (gay) son Jacob Bernstein in The NYT and was shocked to read that she found out about her cancer in 2006 and chose to keep quiet about it. It's a shame that we didn't get a chance to tell HER how much her wit and talent meant to us.

Valerie has taped an episode of CBS's THE DOCTORS that will run on Monday, March 11. She's discussing her diagnosis. Joining her are her husband and former MTM SHOW co-stars Ed Asner and Cloris Laachman.
