"Superstar" is my favorite Carpenters song of all time. (It's also the name of the Todd Haynes stop-action-doll film about the pop duo that I happened to see near Georgetown while interning on Capitol Hill in the late '80s). In the comments, please tell me what YOUR favorite Carpenters song is.
Read more about Haynes's masterpiece HERE.
It's currently on YouTube, although it disappears from time to time. Richard Carpenter is NOT a fan!

Mine would be "Superstar" as well.
*sigh* Karen Carpenter.
Top of the World
Kenneth, I love your site!!!!
I grew up on the music of Richard & Karen. I knew all the songs and sang (badly) along with them in my room in Lennox CA during the early 1970's.
If I had to pick one, it would have to be "Rainy Days and Mondays".
Only one!! Don't think I can do that but the first three that came to mind: Only Yesterday, Please, Mr. Postman, Rainy Days and Mondays but I could have listed a dozen that I love easily.
They excelled at recording Paul Williams penned songs; my favorite is "I Won't Last A Day Without You".
Oh. My. God. So many ... Close to You, We've Only Just Begun, A Kind of Hush. I couldn't possibly choose just one.
It's Going To Take Some Time. Just because of Dishwalla's wonderful cover on the "If I Was A Carpenter" tribute album. Sadly, couldn't find the wonderful music video they did, but I did find this: http://youtu.be/il4xJ2k_VUg
I'll take their covers of "Ticket to Ride" or "This Masquerade" for 100 please Kenny.
"I Need to Be in Love."
The video is pretty moving, too.
Apparently this song was one of Karen's favorites.
One of my favorite things about Christmas is Merry Christmas Darling, as well as the rest of the album.
My favorite is 1972's "Goodbye to Love." I love the fuzz guitar solo in it.
I agree with your choice of Superstar*, followed by Close To You and Rainy Days and Mondays.
*If I have the story correct, Superstar was supposed to used as the lead song for The Last Picture Show but Bogdanovich scrapped it. Can anyone confirm that story?
Great song. One correction--the movie isn't stop-action, but the dolls are used as puppets. Which is almost creepier.
Without a doubt . . . "We've Only Just Begun."
