Only on the Upper West Side of Manhattan would you find a solar-powered trash can!
Inhabitat reports:
BigBelly Solar trash cans use solar power to compact garbage in order to reduce the need for pick-up. With a population as large as NY’s, trash becomes a noticeable hazard in areas of the city and these solar-powered wonders are known to have the capacity to compress up to 150 gallons of it to keep the streets cleaner.

I find this worrisome for things like cats.
Union Square has had them for a few years now...
Seattle has had them for years too...
Actually - they're all over the city. We have a few in Morningside Park.
We've had them in Boston since about 2003
