Sign Language


 The secret ingredient is the hyphen! (Unnecessary, but nicely done all the same!)

Why not a hyphen? isn't chocolate-chip a compound adjective in this context?

It's not "wrong." It's just when something is very clear without a hyphen, you generally don't need to include one.

As a fellow editor, I think I may have to respectfully question your exception to this hyphen. It actually makes it clearer, especially to someone who isn't that familiar with American English (or American junk food). After all, it's not a "chip cookie" with chocolate flavoring. In that respect, "chocolate-chip cookie" is like "banana-nut bread."
